What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

Veins carry deoxygenated blood from other parts of your body back to the heart. In order to ensure that blood travels in one direction, your veins have small structures called valves to prevent the blood from flowing backward. Venous insufficiency (CVI) is a condition that occurs when the venous wall and/or valves in the leg veins are not working effectively, making it difficult for blood to return to the heart from the legs. CVI causes blood to “pool” or collect in these veins, and this pooling is called stasis. Pregnancy, weight gain, and the simple effects of aging are

I cannot believe the results that I have achieved after having two vein closure procedures with Dr. Blass. Although I knew that I was experiencing pain, restless legs, swelling, fatigue and overall discomfort...I never could have imagined how much it was affecting my life until I obtained relief. From the very first call to the office to the consultation and finally to the procedures, each and every person at the office was top notch. I can walk up flights of stairs and spend my entire day on my feet and no longer have swelling at the end of the day. I wake up refreshed and feel amazing. No need to go to the mainland...we have a talented and proficient surgeon in Key West! I couldn't be happier with Dr. Blass and his entire team.

We Can Help

The Board Certified General Surgeons at Southernmost Surgery & Veins offer a variety of treatments to address the cause of CVI. These minimally invasive procedures are done in the office and with little recovery time, so you may resume your normal activities within hours.  Treatments include:

RadioFrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. (Ablation means a doctor uses heat to damage tissue, which makes scar tissue form. This scar tissue closes the vein.) This technique uses radiofrequency energy (instead of laser energy) to heat up and damage the wall inside a vein.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy effectively treats varicose and spider veins. It’s often considered the treatment of choice for small varicose veins. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein. The sclerotherapy solution causes the vein to scar, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins

Phlebectomy

Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a small scalpel or needle to remove varicose veins that lie just beneath the surface of the leg. Your doctor will instruct on how to prepare, including any changes to your regular medication schedule.

Venous Stenting

In cases of venous insufficiency due to venous compression of deep veins, stents may be deployed into the veins to provide structural support. Stents are alloy mesh tubes delivered to their target area using a vascular catheter and in a compressed state
